Valencia GP : Alonso & Massa Friday quotes

Fernando Alonso :
"Overall, it was the beginning of a positive weekend in Valencia, my second home race of the year. We completed our entire program, working primarily on the tires, including the key element this Grand Prix is the introduction of the tire medium for the first time this season. It was important to go through so many turns, as on a circuit like this, do a lot of miles to help you gain confidence behind the wheel of the car , pushing to the limit, which actually improves your performance. The characteristics of the circuit well suited to our car, but it is too early to say where we are compared to the other. In the past, we have been fit the first day before you see us being relegated to a second in qualifying. Therefore, I do not even want to consider the time today. In the first two free practice sessions, so you try things and the track changes so rapidly, even more on a street circuit like this, it is really impossible to make a prognosis. The car seems to behave well, so we can address the skills with confidence, while remaining aware that we will be fighting with very strong opponents. It is not by chance that Red Bull has won every pole positions during the first seven races of the season and they are clearly the favorites. It will be easier to overtake here in Monaco, but the grid position will be no less important."
Felipe Massa :
"I would say it was a good day, much better than the other Friday of the season after three hours of testing. The car seems competitive and I do not expect a very different situation from that in Canada two weeks ago. It is true that we are only on Friday, but it starts well, the tires worked well, with both options and bonuses, even if the options have offered more grip. There is a big difference between the two types of gums and the temperatures are well above those found in Canada. The balance of the car is not perfect yet, because too often we block our wheels with brakes ."

Fernando's Blog : a race at home !

In a few days, the European Grand Prix weekend gets underway. It’s the second race of the season held in Spain and it is an important one for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and for me, as it presents another opportunity for me to race in front of my fans. To tell the truth, I’ve never been that lucky in this race since it’s been held on the
Valencia street circuit, especially last year when, despite having a very competitive car, I finished down in eighth place. However, everyone remembers what
happened with the appearance of the Safety Car and there’s no point going over it again. I always
believe that luck and bad luck balance out by the end of the season and maybe this unwritten rule also applies to race tracks. If that’s the case, I would be more than happy if last year’s
misfortune was paid back now! In fact, it seems that in general so far this season, luck has not come our way: in the race in Montreal, not one damned thing went right.
I know that our fans are eagerly awaiting our first win of the
season and I can assure you that the same goes for us. At the last two races, we showed we were clearly capable of winning and, especially in Monaco, we came pretty close, although I believe that even in Canada I could have fought for it all the way to the end, given what we had seen in
qualifying. Now we go to a track with reasonably similar
characteristics to Montreal and there is no obvious reason why we should not be competitive here too. The 150º Italia will be pretty much in the same configuration seen at the last race and the
major new element will be the race debut of the Pirelli Medium compound tyre, running alongside the Soft. Over the winter, I got the chance to test this tyre, but now it will be a completely different ball game, given that the difference in
temperature compared to
February and March

will be of the
order of 20 degrees and because the Valencia track characteristics definitely cannot be compared to
those of Jerez and Barcelona, nor to the permanent track at Cheste,
around twenty kilometres from the city centre. In Montreal, we were able to assess these tyres
during the two free practice
sessions on Friday, but it’s one thing to do a few laps on a track that is not necessarily that well adapted to this type of tyre and quite another to evaluate it in depth with an eye on qualifying and the race.
I feel special ties to the city of Valencia as it has become
something of a symbolic place in the history of my relationship with Ferrari. It was in fact in Cheste
that I made my first public
appearance after having signed my first contract with Scuderia
Ferrari Marlboro, at the 2009 Ferrari Days event and it was also at this track that I had my first official drive of a Formula 1 Ferrari, on 3 February last year.
Well, maybe that means it’s time to add another “first” to this story…And actually, I have already won the European Grand Prix twice before, when the race
was run at the Nurburgring: as the saying goes, “never two without
three…”

La Gazzetta de Ferrari

* According to rumors circulating on the web, Ferrari would recruit Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds in 2013 as the two men on the stroke of a ban from working in an F1 team before that date.
* Rumors again this time about Felipe Massa. After the rumor of Rosberg, this time it's announced Mark Webber could come in the Scuderia in 2012. What do you think?
* Fernando Alonso has been ranked as the third highest well paid sportsman in the world with a salary of $ 45M per year ! the first of this ranking is the Swiss tennis player Roger Federer.

The news of the week

* As you probably already know, the GP of Bahrain has been permanently removed from the 2011 calendar after the teams are formally opposed with its return.
* The date of the future United States GP, scheduled in June 2012, could be reviewed because of high temperatures that still exist there today at this time of year. There is even talk of a date in September. That said it is unclear how the FIA may change this date as the GP of the United States must take place before or after the Canada one for logistical reasons.
* FIA has taken the decision to broadcast the well blown from the GP at Silverstone. In addition they will be totally banned in 2012. So which team(s) will reap a profit?

Fernando in cars 2

Fernando Alonso has been fortunate to have his character in the animated film "Cars 2" that will be released in France this summer.
alongside Lewis Hamilton (whose car is all black), the character of Fernando is portrayed by a small blue sports car (to recall the flag of Asturias) above with the Spanish flag in memory of the helmet wearing by Fernando.
And now this is a short video showing a scene from the film featuring the character of Fernando and Lewis (scene in Spanish):

and another one where you can see the same scene in backstage with Fernando :

Canada GP : Alonso & Massa Sunday quotes

Fernando Alonso :
"Nothing was wrong as soon as we saw it was raining this morning. We have done our best qualifying of the year but we had a start behind the safety car. When I felt that for me the intermediaries were the best tires, rain arrived just as the red flag. Those who had not yet changed they could do without it costing them anything. Then there was the duel with Button after which I had to leave the car on the side, I could not leave. It's a shame because today we had a good race pace but we were unlucky. This is not a feeling but a fact, when you do not score points, you should immediately turn the page and look towards the next race. I think we can do well in Valencia because it is another circuit that should suit our car, as here.
The championship is not finished yet but we must now rely on the mistakes of others to have hope. Our performance was good here, especially because of the characteristics of the circuit but also with these improvements. We must stand tall and be confident in our abilities and hard work."
Felipe Massa :
"Obviously I can not be happy with that sixth place, given the potential we had. My chances of finishing on the podium and to fight for victory evaporated when I have exceeded Karthikeyan. It was slow and the dry line, I had to go on the wet and I touched the barrier because I lost control of the car. With the safety car following behind my back I could and eventually I managed to exceed Kobayashi in the last meters to finish sixth. It is useless to deny that I'm angry, we qualified in the top 3 yesterday and after the race start our hopes were ended! However, I must say I am happy with the performance level of the car, which was fast with both intermediate wet tires that, even if they have given me some difficulties. Now we go to Valencia, we can be competitive there, given the characteristics that are close by, we'll have the tires tested on Friday, and we'll see what it will give us.

Canada GP : Alonso & Massa Saturday quotes

Fernando Alonso :
"For a long time, since Singapore 2010 that I was not on the first row of a grid and I am also pleased that Massa had achieved the third position, this means that the team work well and that we have progressed. It was important to show that we are competitive and we succeeded, during Q3 we had some doubts about the strategy for the race tomorrow, and we took some risky choices, plus we've decided to preserve our super soft tires during qualifying, it is difficult to know if we made the right choice. It is clear that on a track like this where downforce is not needed, our shortcomings are somewhat hidden, but it is true that our developments made here have really helped us and it is important for the rest of the championship because we want to fight for top positions.
It might rain tomorrow, making the race more difficult than usual, we must be prepared to make the most of it. We tried to put the Red Bulls under pressure from the start but we knew that McLaren would be strong, especially since they may have opted for setting rains."
Felipe Massa :
"It's a great start to the weekend for us, we have always been competitive and we are finally able to leave before the race tomorrow. The weather could be different and we must be prepared to face this kind of situation. I am happy with the car and the team worked really well, so that I'm confident for the race because the car behaved very well since yesterday, we have a great chance to stop these series of negative results. The fact that the differences are small with Vettel is really encouraging for the future. However, we know that tomorrow the race will be difficult but we can have a car much more competitive in the race and in qualifying. I expect to see very strong with McLaren Red Bull competitive. A podium would be an excellent result, the struggle for victory would be even better.

Fernando Alonso at the "partita del cuore 2011"

May 30, Fernando Alonso took part in a charity football match in Italy for the Telethon. This event called "Partita del cuore"(which literally means the heart game in Italian) is a football match that saw three teams compete: a team of politicians, another one of Italian singers and a last onefor the Telethon in which Fernando played. Fernando group photo in action! Felipe Massa was also present as the Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo, who came to support his men.

Fernando's blog : Canada GP

After a brief cycle of races in Europe, here we are again on another long intercontinental voyage, this time heading West. The Montreal race is one of the most popular with the drivers and the teams: the city is very welcoming and the people are very interested in Formula 1, to the extent that the grandstands are already busy on Friday.
I arrived yesterday evening and this afternoon I popped down to the track to meet up with the team. I found that the boys were in good spirits, wanting to demonstrate here that Monte Carlo wasn’t a flash in the pan. There is promise that it can happen. Even though it has some very fast stretches, the Canadian track suits cars which can jump over the kerbs without losing too much balance and cars that have good traction on the exits of the slow corners. Those are both characteristics that are among the strong points of the 150° Italia.
Here aerodynamic efficiency, which is our Achilles Heel at the moment, is less important and so we think we can have more chance to fight for the top places. Brakes are another fundamental factor on this circuit: we will need to work hard during free practice to understand the correct level of cooling in order to avoid the risk of problems in the race.
In Montreal we will again have the two soft tyre compounds prepared by Pirelli: the Soft and the Supersoft. Last year this was one of the few races in which we saw more pit stops than the traditional one-stop because the degradation of the tyres is quite high. Even though the Pirellis are different to the Bridgestones, I don’t think we will see anyone manage to get to the end of the race with only one tyre change, as we saw in Monaco. As we have seen this year, it will be important to pick the right moment for the pit stop so as not to lose too much time compared to your direct rivals.

For the first time this year we will have two places where it will be possible to use the DRS on Sunday: the first is after the apex of Turn 10, the second on the pit straight. I’m interested to see what will happen: on paper whoever manages to pass in the first zone will then have a big advantage because they will be able to use the movable wing again on the main straight, even though they are ahead of the car they are battling.
Last year I managed to make the podium but we left Montreal with a definite sensation of having deserved more than our eventual third place. There were a couple of episodes that didn’t go well for us that prevented us from picking up the win that was within our reach. We also had the chance to win at Monaco ten days ago and it would have been good to have won there because wins have now eluded us for too long. It remains very difficult because I expect McLaren and Red Bull to be very strong but we must not count anything out.
The second third of the season is starting and the situation in the championship is far from favourable. It’s true that there are still many races to go but it’s clear that we must try to find a catalyst for this title chase in terms of points. We hope to start straightaway, on a track that carries the name of one of the drivers who is most loved by Ferrari’s tifosi: Gilles Villeneuve."

The paddock podium of Monaco

The 4 in:
* Sebastian Vettel:
the series continues to Seb who has perfectly mastered his subject in Monaco, a GP that he had never won before! While Vettel has enjoyed much luck at the GP, but it is also part of a victory in F1, do not forget. * Fernando Alonso :
Fernando said that the Monaco circuit contains the F150 and he did not lie! Nando has done a perfect race with a very good start and a good strategy from his team . Moreover, the end of the race was fantastic, even trying to overtake Vettel . Fernando can had a little disappointment after the GP, that of not knowing what might happen if the race had not been neutralized. Would he have won?
* Jenson Button:
The British driver is definitely the surprise of this GP because it's rather his teammate who was expected . Nevertheless he did a very good weekend to begin with the qualifier session where he earned 2nd place and then taking a good run even pace with Vettel! small downside, however: the strategy which saw him loose a seat when he could better conserve his tires.
* Kamui Kobayashi:
by scoring big points the Japanese driver showed he was the future of Sauber and saved the weekend of the team after the release of Sergio Perez. Damage, however, that he had been overtaken by Webber after the red flag .
* Mark Webber :
the Australian driver definitely has trouble with his starts ! relegated to 4th place in the first turn, he also had to suffer a catastrophic first stop which saw him depart far away! but with his good run and the benefit of the many retires Mark drop back to 5th place in the neutralization of the race. He is the only one to benefit the second start of the race because of overtaking Kobayashi to finish at 4th place. Congratulations to him!

the 3 out:
* Lewis Hamilton:
the least we can say is that this was not the day nor the weekend of Lewis ! but was it a reason to slip as he did after the race (note: Lewis had criticized the stewards just after the GP and the tone of the joke he had understood that the FIA might be racist ; more he said that Massa and Maldonado, the two drivers who had caused such penalties , were stupid)? No certainly not! Lewis should have accepted the fact that he made a bad race, and yet he is doing well since with the red flag he keeps his 6th place, and might not have had to try to overcome these drivers at all costs More he has ruined their race ! Lewis go back from Monaco with a bad attitude that must be corrected at the next GP! Note that Lewis apologized to the Fia as well as with Massa and Maldonado but will it be enough ?
* Mercedes GP :
the weeks go by and look the same for the German team that fails to improve his car. Yet Michael Schumacher starting fifth could feed big hopes but it was not the case since he had to retire ! about Nico Rosberg, who suffered a big crash in EL3 fortunately without consequences for the pilot, he was still able to participate in the qualifiers but could not find a good rhythm during the race. Mercedes seems already looking to 2012, can be a blessing in disguise?
* Regulation under the red flag:
Maybe the FIA should reconsider a point of regulation under the red flag is the possibility to change tires because this regulation has completely destroyed the suspense that the 3 leading men had succeeded in creating ! shame!

the unclassifiable:
* Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado:
the two pilots could have scored big points if they had not crossed paths with Lewis Hamilton. A damage for them since their start was flawless.
- A big thought for Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov who suffered a big overrun (in qualifying for Perez and during the race for Petrov) but who are fortunately well ! we were very afraid for them, but we will be very happy to find them in shape in Montreal.

Monaco GP : Alonso & Massa Sunday quotes

Fernando Alonso :
"This is my best result this year and I think it is very important, especially for the team. A podium was necessary, we fight for victory at the end of the race. Of course, this remains an unusual circuit and we should not draw conclusions from a race which is always so special. We must reduce the gap that separates us from the best: in Canada, we have improvements on the car and we hope they prove useful. I made a good start today if there had been a little more space, maybe I could do the same in Spain. Then I tried to keep my tires before attacking Vettel at the very end of the race, but then the red flag is dropped and it was all over, with new tires because it was impossible to beat. Unfortunately, these things can happen here and this is part of the character of this Grand Prix.
We must be satisfied with this outcome and look with confidence to Montreal and Valencia, two races where we were well last year. The gap in the championship is great, but there is still a long way to go before the end of the season."
Felipe Massa :
"I am very disappointed with how my race was over. After Hamilton had tried to pass me at Loews, which is where it is impossible to overtake, he hit me and pushed me into Webber. The car was not good and I could not drive it properly, which is why I was inside when entering the tunnel. This placed me on the dirty side of the track and then I finished my race in the barriers.
Initially, I had a good flight, but the first corner I found myself with Webber and Fernando [Alonso] before me: I was outside and Rosberg managed to pass me on the inside. That means I missed the train that would have kept in contact with the leaders because I spent too much time behind the Mercedes German. Today we were competitive and, given the way things happened, I could have finished fourth. Now we head to Canada, where we hope to have a car capable of fighting, as was the case here.
